Film Screening and Q & A with filmmaker Nora Jacobson

Sat. May 6th at 4:00 in the Roxbury Town Hall
Free Screening of: Ruth Stone’s Vast Library of the Female Mind

Q&A Session with Filmmaker Nora Jacobson following the film

“A remarkable portrait of a remarkable life… How do grief and language shape us? Using both a poet’s and filmmaker’s tools, Jacobson expertly weaves each of these threads in Ruth Stone’s story, creating a documentary that beautifully manages to remember, to elegize, and to ultimately sing.”–Tyler Meier, The Poetry Center, University of Arizona

Details

Film Running Time: 77 Minutes
Ruth Stone was a promising young poet, living an idyllic life with her beloved husband Walter Stone, a poet and professor when he died unexpectedly by suicide in 1959. Already a published poet with one book out at the time of Walter’s death, Ruth found a way to continue writing while raising her three young daughters and teaching at various universities around the country as an itinerant poet. Nora Jacobson chronicles Stone’s heroic life story as a poet, mother, and teacher in a 76-minute film that leavesits viewers inspired, enlightened, entertained, and uplifted. A visually compelling film as well, enhanced with animation by Ruth’s granddaughter Bianca Stone and rare archival footage, it captures the rural grist of Stone’s heroic career, leaving no question as to why she has become both a Vermont and national treasure.
–Chard DeNiord, Vermont Poet Laureate
